Solar power reached a historic milestone in the EU, generating 52 TWh, 25% of the bloc's electricity, in June 2026, surpassing its previous record of 47 TWh (23%) set in May. This made solar the EU's largest single power source for the month, ahead of nuclear (21%), gas (15%), wind (14%), and coal (just 8%). It marks only the third time solar has topped the EU's power mix, following June 2025 and May 2026.
The surge coincided with high summer demand driven by heatwave-related cooling needs, with solar helping stabilise supply as other sources struggled in hot, still conditions.
Growth has been rapid: solar generation has risen over 20% annually since 2021, fuelled by 65.1 GW of new capacity added in 2025 alone.
Individual countries hit new records too, Spain reached 34% solar share, Germany 36%, and Poland, despite heavy coal use, 24%.
